This is a lesson plan for teaching kids about nutrition.
In a time when food advice keeps changing, our kids need some sound knowledge on what food does for our bodies. As we teach our children about food and what our bodies do with it, they will understand better how to take care of their bodies by paying attention to the food they eat. This nutrition lesson can help. This will take about 20-30 minutes to teach.
Objective – Teach them about Nutrients
Objective: Students will become familiar with the purpose of different kinds of nutrients and what foods to find them in.

Materials:
- the word “nutrients” and its definition where the kids can see it
- papers labeled with the words; CARBOHYDRATES, PROTEIN, FIBER, VITAMIN C, and CALCIUM
- tape
- grocery ads, scissors, and glue
- nutrients color page (see below)
Teaching Method
Teach your students about nutrients: Our bodies need several different nutrients. Nutrients means things our bodies need from food to help them work right. Show the kids the word nutrients and its definition. Say that some of the nutrients we need are; carbohydrates for energy, protein for growth, fiber for digestion, vitamin C for cellular repair, and calcium for bone strength.
Take the paper labeled Carbohydrates and tape it to the wall. Say again that our bodies need carbohydrates to give us energy. Talk to the kids about what kinds of foods have carbohydrates inside. Some examples are breads, cereals, pasta, fruits, milk, etc. Have the students each find one example of food with carbohydrates from the grocery ads, cut them out, and paste them to the Carbohydrates paper.

Take the paper labeled Protein and tape it to the wall. Say again that our bodies need protien for growth. Talk to the kids about what kinds of foods have protein inside. Some examples of protein foods are meat, beans, eggs, yogurt, nuts, whole grains, peaches, etc. Have the students find one example of a food with protein from the grocery ads, cut them out, and paste them to the protein paper.
Take the paper labled Fiber and tape it to the wall. Say agian that our bodies need fiber to help us digest all that we eat. Talk to the kids about what kinds of foods have fiber inside. Some examlpes of fiber foods are carrots, broccoli, celery, cucumbers, peas, lettuce, tomatoes, berries, beans, etc. Have students find one example of a fiber rich food from the grocery ads, cut them out and paste them to the fiber paper.
Take the paper labeled Vitamin C and tape it to the wall. Say again that our bodies need vitamin C to help us be able to heal when we’re hurt or sick. Talk to the kids about what kinds of foods have vitamin C inside. Foods that are rich in vitamin C are most kinds of fruits or vegetables, such as grapes, strawberries, oranges, broccoli, apples, bell peppers, etc. Have students find one example of a vitamin C food from the grocery ads, cut them out, and paste them to the vitamin C paper.

Take the paper labeled Calcium and tape it to the the wall. Say again that our bodies need calcium to help us have strong bones. Talk to the kids about what kinds of foods have calcium inside. Some examples of calcium rich foods are milk, other dairy products, beans, broccoli, and carrots. Have students find one example of a calcium rich food from the grocery ads, cut them out, and paste them to the calcium paper.
Finish up
Give each child a copy of the nutrients color page. As they color, ask each of them to tell you something that they remember from the lesson.

Pro teacher tip: When kids ask questions, it means they are interested and curious to know more. Do the best you can to answer their questions and look up the answers if you need to.
